#OTBWR's: Pauline Dutkowski/ Wood Diamonds and Other Eccentricities @ WR Community Centre Gallery

“LIVING WATER”
36” X 24” X 1” $1,200.-
Pauline McLean Dutkowski
Fibre/Textiles: Handwoven wool tapestry with felted wool on a silk background.

LIVING WATER was originally part of a hand woven wool tapestry created in 1988 as the focus of a much larger piece. It was presented by Pauline in a two person exhibition at what was then known as the Station Arts Centre in White Rock.
That building is now the White Rock Museum and Archives. At the time her surname was McLean. LIVING WATER had a varied “life” for over twenty-five years. If only inanimate art could speak! It was returned to her recently.
Finally, she decided to give it new life and a more contemporary appearance. The central portion of the fibrescape is hand woven using wool and metallic threads. This tapestry area depicts the flow of water. The “driftwood” and other accents are felted wool. All assembled on a base of silk.
The term “fibrescape” is used to describe the resulting art piece created by using several different methods
of manipulating fibre. Without water there is no life in the body. The soul also needs the living water of life.
The title LIVING WATER is taken from the book of John, chapter 7 and verse 38

“KOY”
Alicia M B Ballard $ 975.-14”x18” Acrylic on canvas board mounted
on a 24”x28” cut of lumber to create the illusion of looking into a pond from a deck.
Koy: a made up word: Koi + Coy, to better describe the subject and its characteristics . The technique used in this piece is a rather time consuming one, I like to use it for its methodic tracing and colour blending; slow and repetitive as it is creative, changing from inch to inch in colour and widths. Finished with several coats of varnish to give it a glass like effect.

Revisiting the meditative/repetitive, time consuming process I find so relaxing. Albeit, the drawing of the spiral was a challenge call to imagine spacial images and their intricacies. An up and down spiral was the resut. Mustering deep focus as I followed with brush and colour the intricate accompanying arabesques... It took longer to complete than anticipated as I have taken to add gold leaf on top of where once I only used gradating colours.

“ISLAND GLOW” $575.-
Alicia M B Ballard
9”x12” Acrylic/Mixed, on birchwood canvas incorporating a 4”x8” acrylic skin.

Using an ancient image “lifting” method with contemporary materials, whereby layering thin coats of acrylic the image is then “lifted” from its original background to be applied onto another. In this case, a larger one to enhance the size and mood of the original work. Inspired by another intense sky photograph taken by myself, backlighting the islands and clouds... Medusa” $3800.-
AliciaMBBallard

Acrylic/Mixed Media 4' x 5' on canvas
Very briefly:

Medusa’s story slightly varies in time and depending of whom the narrator is.Often contradictory, her stories gravitate between victim and villain. A guardian and protectress, representing birth and earth. Medusa ultimately “became” a monster, a Gorgon with a hideous face and living venomous snakes in place of hair. Greek mythological figures came to life during the Iron and Bronze Ages. Medusa was known for her mesmerizing beauty and was turned into a monster by Athena in a fit of jealousy; apparently Medusa (also had) made love with her brother in Athena’s Temple - the last straw!.Anyone looking at the ravishing Medusa would turn into stone! Eventually, Perseus, after a prolonged and convoluted journey managed to approach her from the rear (with the help of some local witches) and, decapitated her. He later handed Medusa’s head to Athena to place it on her shield. However, this is where it becomes even more complicated as Pegasus was her son, some stories say Pegasus came/flew out of the wound inflicted on her neck while being decapitated by Perseus.
The ring of fire represents war and calamities, as ofter in ancient time fire was set to eliminate the enemy. Dagger and shield representing both the iron and bronce age respectively. In classical antiquity the image of Medusa appears in evil averting devises know as Gorgonion.... (Which, is not a Gargoyle). It took over a year of a succession of discarded plans to complete this work.
Torn between the concepts of “beauty and ugliness” I eventually decided to obscure her face in order to solve my dilemma and also to spare us all from turning to stone.

With social commentary always on my mind, I am addressing gossip issues and one way of dealing with it: accepting and honoring our uniqueness. Just as jealousy is a “paralyzer”, envy is a “motivator”...

“PEACE” $250.-
AliciaMBBallard
8.25” x 22.5” acrylic/mixed on particle board
Drawing on even earlier times, this piece was prepared for last years’ (2015) annual “Blogblast For Peace“ event. An online blogger peace movement that began on November 7, 2006 by Blogger/Writer Mimi Lenox, with a large group of blogger friends and sympathizers. It has grown into a global eventwith thousands of individuals and groups participating around the world (having also spilled over to FB these past few years). “Peace” is an expression of what is wrong with it: Sadly, efforts appear to be in shambles. Still, we add our voices, united on one day embracing the same dream.

Acrylic & Silk

It was a new process working on wood. I am primarily a silk artist which, I wanted to incorporate into this new  work.
Silk is painted with dyes, with a brush onto the silk by hand.
The silk pieces were infused into the gouache with a "gel" based finish. Throughout the process my imagined rain drops turned into leaves... imposing its will.
This experience has definitely encouraged me to continue working on wood.
